Zoning laws governing construction in some areas of Buenos Aires permitted, and still permit, complete exploitation of a building’s envelope by requiring setbacks from the site boundary only in the center of an urban block. Additional restrictions on window construction where future adjacencies are possible also encourage full development of most sites. The resulting characteristic streetscape, in which buildings stand side by side, effectively limits a building’s individual expression to the articulation of its single exposed façade. The La Plata College of Law, a typical product of this zoning pattern, is distinguished by a column-free central space made possible by a system of perimeter bracing that exploits the two adjacent buildings.
