Columbus Circle Pedestrian Overpass
Columbus Circle Pedestrian Overpass
New York, New York
1998 3,000 m²An open-ended ideas competition to redesign one of New York’s main vehicular interchanges was organized by the city’s Municipal Art Society. RVA’s entry used a very large hemispherical trellis to reclaim Columbus Circle for pedestrians. Two spiraling walkways, accessible via ramp or stairs, cross the busy intersection above street level, with walkers free to decide how high to ascend. The steel structure thus provides safe passage and 360-degree views, including glimpses into Central Park otherwise available only to those in neighboring buildings.
