Construction on this enormous house, in the rolling hills of eastern Pennsylvania, began only after RVA submitted more than 25 different designs. The building, reminiscent in its layout and specifications of the Penang Residence in Kuala Lumpur, is arranged around an entry courtyard that serves both as the heart of the house and as the terminus of a long formal driveway through the secluded estate. Along with the usual complement of living and service areas, the plan includes ample naturally lit wall space for the patron’s extensive collection of modern paintings, an underground theater for film projection and other forms of entertainment, and an extensive temperature- and humidity-controlled wine cellar. The house’s steel frame is clad in rough-hewn yellow and brown rock quarried near the site.
