"The pendulum swing between architects seeing themselves as artists or as technicians exacts a high price on the profession. Architects do architecture, which is a very complex thing in itself." - Rafael Viñoly
"My design philosophy is rooted in the development of architectural ideas that are powerful, distinctive, and relevant to the specifics of both program and context." - Rafael Viñoly
"Architecture is a dialogue with the forces of life. In every project, I seek to maximize the opportunity for civic investment with a goal of forming iconic works that fulfill the needs of the client." - Rafael Viñoly

Project Director
London
44 (0) 20 8206 6200John Kinnaird joined Rafael Viñoly Architects in 1991. Throughout his career, Mr. Kinnaird has contributed to the programming, design development, documentation and administration of some of the most important projects produced by the firm. These include the Tokyo International Forum, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Bard College, Nasher Art Museum at Duke University and the Battersea Power Station Master Plan. During his tenure he has worked closely with Mr. Viñoly in all phases of the design and construction of many types of projects including private residences, academic and research buildings, courthouses and multistory mixed-use buildings.
Mr. Kinnaird was involved in the Tokyo International Forum from the competition award to construction. He relocated to Tokyo for a year to aid the transfer of information from design phase to construction administration phase specifically for Hall A, the largest of four performance halls in the complex. On the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, he was responsible for the implementation of the overalldesign of the general building including the elaboration of the public spaces, restaurants, rehearsal rooms, and building exterior. In addition to managing the project, he was intimately involved in the coordination of acoustics and theater equipment as well as production of interior finishes for the 2500 seat Verizon Hall and the 750 seat multi-purpose Perlman Hall.
Mr. Kinnard was also the project manager for the first phase of the Bard College Center for Science and Computation and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, which is noted for its innovative structure and efficiency. He coordinated the structural and mechanical systems of the complex atrium roof which are formed by a hierarchy of structural systems, all supported on five primary beams.
On relocating permanently to London in 2005, Mr Kinnaird initially acted as the Project Manager for the £250 million office tower at 20 Fenchurch Street in the City of London. With that project going on hold temporarily (having received planning approval and winning a successful publicinquiry), Mr Kinnaird undertook management of the 8 million square foot master plan for the Battersea Power Station in London. That project has just been submitted for planning and as such Mr Kinnaird is perfectly poised to take full time Project Management duties on the University of Ulster, Greater Belfast Development.
